First off i think street photography is a societal plus. As a practicing street photographer i may be understood as having a biased view of the issue of ethics in street photography: After all, street photography embodies the documentation of fleeting moments. Street photography is all about catching this one magical moment of somebody’s life, no matter how sad or joyful it is.

Up front, my position on street photography ethics, is that i think that it is important to make images of our society, as it is, unvarnished, ie without the consent of subject. The idea behind this exception is that if a photographer tries to take a picture of you in the street, it's his legal right, but it's also your legal right to hide your face, turn away, or take steps to not be in the picture and protect your privacy. One situation that examines the relationship between the photographer and the photographed is when the subject is homeless, living on the street. Clearly i must find it ethical to invade strangers privacy with my camera.

Street photography ethics and respect is a touchy subject and i am not talking of street photography rules but rather more how photographers choose to behave. What are your personal morals and ethics when it comes to street photography? When doing street photography, i think it’s important to keep in mind that these are human beings you’re photographing, not objects placed in your line of vision for the purpose of you being able to photograph them.
